INDUSTRY REFERENCE
Men's hair system glossary.
Neutral definitions for construction, specification, fitting, and ordering terms used by professional buyers.
DEFINED TERM
Adhesive remover
Also used: adhesive solvent · bond remover
A product formulated to loosen an adhesive bond or residue during removal and cleanup.
Why it matters: Professional buyers need compatibility instructions for the client's skin, the specified base, and the chosen adhesive before adopting a service process.
DEFINED TERM
Base
Also used: base material · base construction
The foundation material and construction that carries the hair in a hair system.
Why it matters: The base affects attachment, airflow, edge presentation, cleaning, cutting limits, and handling.
DEFINED TERM
Base size
Also used: base dimensions · unit size
The stated length and width, or other documented dimensions, of a hair system base or starting blank.
Why it matters: Nominal size must be checked against coverage, template, orientation, and verified cutting limits rather than treated as the finished fit.
DEFINED TERM
Bleached knots
Also used: knot bleaching
Knots that have been chemically lightened to reduce the visible contrast between the hair knot and the base.
Why it matters: The treatment can change how the front or parting appears and should be evaluated on the actual sample.
DEFINED TERM
Bonding
Also used: adhesive attachment
Attaching a hair system to the scalp or prepared surface with a liquid or tape adhesive.
Why it matters: The bonding method must suit the base, wear plan, cleanup routine, and client skin considerations.
DEFINED TERM
Color ring
Also used: hair color ring · color swatch ring
A labeled set of physical hair swatches used to compare color references under controlled viewing conditions.
Why it matters: Codes and swatches are not interchangeable between every supplier, so the approved physical reference and its source should stay with the specification record.
DEFINED TERM
Crown whorl
Also used: crown pattern · whorl
A directional pattern in which hair changes or radiates around a point in the crown area.
Why it matters: The intended position and direction should be recorded because template orientation and ventilation affect the resulting styling pattern.
DEFINED TERM
Curl / wave grade
Also used: curl pattern · wave pattern
A supplier reference used to describe the intended curl or wave pattern of the hair.
Why it matters: The reference should be approved with hair length, condition, and a physical sample because labels are not universally visual.
DEFINED TERM
Custom unit
Also used: made-to-order unit
A hair system produced to a buyer-approved set of measurements and construction instructions rather than selected only from a stock specification.
Why it matters: A custom order needs a complete template, written specification, approval record, and clearly defined tolerances.
DEFINED TERM
Cuttable margin
Also used: cutting margin · trim margin
A verified area at or inside a base boundary that may be trimmed without removing a required construction zone or join.
Why it matters: Outside dimensions alone do not show the safe contouring area, so the margin must be confirmed for the exact build.
DEFINED TERM
Cuticle
Also used: hair cuticle
The overlapping outer layer of a human hair fiber.
Why it matters: Cuticle condition and alignment influence handling, tangling, processing response, and how a hair sample should be evaluated.
DEFINED TERM
Cut-in
Also used: hair system cut-in · integration haircut
The fitting, cutting, and blending process used to integrate a hair system with the wearer's existing hair and intended style.
Why it matters: The cut-in can affect the finished result independently of the supplied unit specification.
DEFINED TERM
Density
Also used: hair density
The amount and distribution of hair ventilated or inserted across a base, often described by a supplier reference or percentage.
Why it matters: A percentage alone is incomplete unless it is tied to a physical reference, zone distribution, and inspection method.
DEFINED TERM
Density chart
Also used: density reference · density sample chart
A physical or documented reference that shows a supplier's named density grades or zone distributions.
Why it matters: Density labels are not universal, so the exact chart, sample, version, and zone instruction should be recorded with an approval.
DEFINED TERM
Double knot
Also used: double-knotted hair
A knotting method in which the hair is secured to the base with an additional turn compared with a single knot.
Why it matters: The knot profile and hold should be assessed by location, base material, and the intended visual result.
DEFINED TERM
Ear tab
Also used: ear-tab area · side tab
A shaped side extension or marked zone near the temple and ear in an extended or full-cap base design.
Why it matters: When the design includes this area, its left and right position and outline should be recorded on the template.
DEFINED TERM
Folded lace
Also used: folded lace edge
A lace edge or perimeter construction in which lace is folded to create a reinforced boundary.
Why it matters: The fold changes edge thickness, handling, attachment choices, and where the base may be cut.
DEFINED TERM
Freestyle ventilation
Also used: freestyle direction · freestyle
Hair insertion or orientation intended to allow styling in more than one direction rather than establish a fixed part or direction.
Why it matters: The label does not define the exact distribution, so the intended styling behavior should be approved from a sample and written instruction.
DEFINED TERM
Front contour
Also used: hairline contour
The planned outline of the front edge of a hair system, commonly recorded as a shape reference or traced line.
Why it matters: The contour must match the wearer's template and intended recession rather than being inferred from a generic label.
DEFINED TERM
Front transition
Also used: hairline transition · front density transition
A planned change in density, direction, or strand placement approaching the front edge of a hair system.
Why it matters: A front specification needs a defined zone reference rather than one overall density instruction.
DEFINED TERM
Graduated density
Also used: density graduation · graduated hairline
A density specification that deliberately varies between defined zones instead of remaining uniform across the base.
Why it matters: The buyer should document each zone and its transition so the distribution can be approved and inspected.
DEFINED TERM
Grey percentage
Also used: grey blend · gray percentage
The stated proportion of grey or light fibers included in a color reference or specified zone.
Why it matters: Distribution and fiber character matter alongside the percentage, so the result should be approved from a physical reference.
DEFINED TERM
Hair direction
Also used: ventilation direction
The intended orientation in which hair leaves the base, such as forward, backward, freestyle, or a specified crown pattern.
Why it matters: Direction affects styling, front transition, crown behavior, and whether the approved sample can be repeated.
DEFINED TERM
Hairline design
Also used: front hairline design
The combined specification for front contour, recession, density transition, direction, and construction at the visible front edge.
Why it matters: A base-family name alone does not define how a finished hairline will present.
DEFINED TERM
Injected hair
Also used: injection · injected ventilation
Hair inserted through a polyurethane-type base so that it appears to emerge without a conventional visible knot on the surface.
Why it matters: The insertion method affects direction, underside construction, repair expectations, and how the sample should be inspected.
DEFINED TERM
Knotting
Also used: knotted ventilation
Securing hair to a mesh or other suitable base by forming knots with one or more hair strands.
Why it matters: Knot type, strand count, placement, and any bleaching treatment affect profile, hold, and visual presentation.
DEFINED TERM
Lace front
Also used: front lace
A construction that uses lace at the front edge of the hair system, whether or not the remaining base uses another material.
Why it matters: The exact lace, edge treatment, knotting, and cutting boundary must be documented rather than assumed from the name.
DEFINED TERM
Lead time
Also used: production lead time · order lead time
The interval between a clearly defined order milestone and a clearly defined completion or readiness milestone.
Why it matters: A quote should name its start and end events and state whether transit is included so different timelines are not compared as if they used the same definition.
DEFINED TERM
Liquid adhesive
Also used: liquid bond · bonding adhesive
A fluid adhesive applied to a prepared skin or base attachment area as part of a bonding process.
Why it matters: A service protocol should specify compatibility, preparation, application, and removal instead of relying on the generic word glue.
DEFINED TERM
Monofilament
Also used: mono base · mono
A woven base material made with relatively structured synthetic filaments and used in selected hair system constructions.
Why it matters: Its weave, stiffness, edge construction, and intended zone should be checked on the actual build.
DEFINED TERM
Nape
Also used: nape area · rear hairline
The lower back of the neck or rear hairline area relevant when an extended or full-cap design reaches that zone.
Why it matters: Its contour, direction, and movement differ from a top-only base, so it should be recorded whenever it is in scope.
DEFINED TERM
Parting
Also used: part · parting area
A line or zone where hair is directed away from each side to create a defined division or expose the base beneath.
Why it matters: Its location, direction, and construction should be approved as a physical result rather than inferred from a style name.
DEFINED TERM
Perimeter
Also used: base perimeter · outer boundary
The outer boundary of a hair system base, including any distinct edge or attachment zones along that boundary.
Why it matters: The perimeter establishes the contour and attachment or cutting constraints that must correspond to the template.
DEFINED TERM
Poly perimeter
Also used: PU perimeter · polyurethane perimeter
A polyurethane zone around all or part of a hair system perimeter, often combined with another center material.
Why it matters: The zone affects bonding, cleanup, airflow, cutting limits, and the location of construction joins.
DEFINED TERM
Processed hair
Also used: chemically processed hair · treated hair
Hair altered from its collected state through one or more color, texture, chemical, or mechanical treatments.
Why it matters: A buyer should request the actual processing description and a physical sample because the phrase human hair does not disclose processing history.
DEFINED TERM
Reattachment
Also used: rebond · reinstall
A service process in which a hair system is removed, the relevant surfaces are cleaned and prepared, and the system is attached again according to the service plan.
Why it matters: The base, adhesive, remover, and skin-preparation steps need a documented workflow rather than a generic service label.
DEFINED TERM
Recession
Also used: temple recession
The planned backward shaping of the hairline near the temples or other specified front areas.
Why it matters: Recession should be recorded on the template and contour rather than chosen from an age label alone.
DEFINED TERM
Remy hair
Also used: Remi hair
Human hair described as having fibers collected or arranged so their cuticle direction is substantially aligned.
Why it matters: The label does not by itself establish processing history, grade, origin, or finished performance; a physical sample and written specification remain necessary.
DEFINED TERM
Service life
Also used: wear life · usable life
The period during which a particular hair system remains usable under defined wear, attachment, cleaning, and maintenance conditions.
Why it matters: It cannot be inferred reliably from a category name because construction, handling, routine, and client activity vary.
DEFINED TERM
Single knot
Also used: single-knotted hair
A knotting method that secures hair to a suitable base with one knot formation.
Why it matters: Its size, strand count, placement, and base location affect the balance between profile and hold.
DEFINED TERM
Split knot
Also used: split-knotted hair
A knotting method that separates the hair emerging from a knot into different directions.
Why it matters: The method influences distribution and direction and should be evaluated on the specified base and zone.
DEFINED TERM
Stock unit
Also used: stock hair system · ready-size unit
A hair system produced to a predefined specification and base size rather than an individual buyer's complete custom template.
Why it matters: Buyers still need to verify usable dimensions, cutting limits, construction, hair specification, and current availability.
DEFINED TERM
Tape tab
Also used: tape landing area
A defined base area intended to provide a practical surface for attachment tape.
Why it matters: Its material, position, size, and cutting boundary affect attachment and service work.
DEFINED TERM
Template / mold
Also used: head template · head mold · pattern
A physical or documented pattern that records the intended base outline, dimensions, front contour, and orientation on the head.
Why it matters: It is the spatial reference for a custom build and should be labeled, measured, and linked to the approved specification.
DEFINED TERM
Thin skin
Also used: thin-skin base · poly skin
An industry category for a low-profile polyurethane hair system base or zone.
Why it matters: The category does not establish exact thickness, construction, ventilation method, edge, or service life; those fields require a product specification and sample.
DEFINED TERM
Ventilation
Also used: hair ventilation
The process and pattern used to attach or insert hair into a hair system base.
Why it matters: The method, direction, strand count, and placement affect appearance, handling, and the repeatability of the build.
DEFINED TERM
V-loop
Also used: V-looped hair · V-loop ventilation
A ventilation method in which a hair strand is looped through a polyurethane-type base without a conventional tied knot.
Why it matters: The loop direction, hold, density, and base thickness should be checked on the exact sample and construction.
DEFINED TERM
Virgin hair
Also used: unprocessed hair
A trade term generally used for human hair that has not previously been chemically colored, permed, or relaxed, although supplier usage can differ.
Why it matters: The term is not equivalent to Remy, origin, or grade, so the processing statement and a physical sample still need verification.
DEFINED TERM
Wefted hair
Also used: hair weft · weft construction
Hair secured along a narrow sewn or bonded track, called a weft, and then incorporated into a construction.
Why it matters: Its row placement and attachment differ from individually ventilated hair and should be identified in the build specification.
